“ I‘enfance” (childhood) Champlain born to Antoine Champlain and Marguerite Le Roy at Hiers-Brouage or port city of La Rochelle He was born in or before August 13,1574 Catholic child

‘Passe-temps’(hobby) Navigator, cartographer, soldier, explorer, administrator and chronicler of New France He’s famous for exploring the settlement of the first permanent European settlement north of Florida, Port Royal, Acadia

Voyage (Journey) Samuel sailed a ship called Don de Dieu He sailed a 150-ton Spain merchant ship During and after his trip he created a map of the Saint Lawrence. Champlain sailed with 9 French soldiers and 300 natives to explore the Riviere des Iroquois (now known as Richelieu River)

La Mort (death) Champlain suffered a severe stroke in October 1635 and died on 25 December 1635 leaving no immediate heirs. He gave much of his French property to his wife Helene before he died from a stroke.

Mariage (marriage) Samuel had to go to court to get married to twelve year old Helene Boulle. Champlain’s marriage was initially quite troubled, Helene rebelled when she was told to join him. They adopted three Montagnais girls named Faith, Hope, and Charity
