A firewall is hardware, software, or a combination of both that is used to prevent unauthorized programs or Internet users from accessing a private network and/or a single computer What is a Firewall?

Hardware Firewalls: Protect an entire network Implemented at the router level Usually more expensive & harder to configure Software Firewalls: Protects a single computer Usually less expensive & easier to configure OS like Windows 7 comes with an integrated firewall Hardware vs. Software Firewalls

The firewall inspects each individual “packet” of data as it arrives at the firewall, inbound or outbound. It determines whether it should allow the packet to pass through or if it should be blocked. How does a Software Firewall Work?

Allow – traffic will flows automatically because it is considered “safe” Block – traffic is blocked when it has been considered dangerous to your computer Ask – Software will ask the user whether or not the traffic should be allowed to pass through Firewall Options

A firewall will stop hackers from accessing your computer It protects your personal information It may be able to block “pop up” ads and detrimental cookies It can determine which programs can access the Internet and which should not Why Have a Firewall?

Firewalls cannot prevent e-mail viruses; only an antivirus product with current definitions can prevent e-mail viruses The firewall should be set to look for periodic updates to the rule-sets and the firewall software itself What a Firewall Cannot do
