1 PART A Location of Safety Equipment in your Biology Lab

2 Goggles O Why - Wear safety goggles to protect your eyes from chemical, heated materials, and glassware. O When – During the entire lab or until the teacher instructs you that it is safe to take them off.

3 Sanitation O There are sinks, liquid soap, and paper towels at most lab stations around the room. O Several labs contain acidic and basic solutions. If a chemical spills on your skin, notify the teacher and rinse with water for about 5 minutes. O In general wash hands after every lab.

4 Fire Blanket O Fire blankets have several uses. O Open fire - Completely cover the flames with the fire blanket by throwing the blanket on top until the fire goes out. O Person on fire - Put flames out on a person's clothes by wrapping the fire blanket around the victim.

5 Fire Extinguisher To operate the fire extinguisher remember P-A-S-S O P - Pull the Pin O A - Aim the hose at the base of the fire from 5-6 feet away. O S - Squeeze the handle. O S - Sweep the hose back and forth across the fire.

6 First Aid Kit O Cuts Press directly on minor cuts which should stop bleeding in a few minutes. Ask for Band-Aid. If you are assisting another person, do not touch an open wound without safety gloves. O Bruising Apply cold compress to reduce swelling. (the nurse has them)

7 First Aid Kit O Minor Burns Immediately flush with cold water until burning sensation is lessened. O Fainting Provide fresh air and have the person recline so that their head is lower than the rest of their body. (go to the nurse)

8 Eye Wash O Flush eyes immediately with water. O Keep doing so for at least 5 minutes O If something is lodged in the eye, do not rub it.

9 Chemical Shower O Used only in case of emergencies. O Use the shower for, including chemical spills and splashes and a person catching on fire. O Rinse affected area for at least 15 minutes to be sure the chemical is completely washed off the body or the fire is completely extinguished.

11 What should you do immediately if someone is injured or there is an accident? TELL THE TEACHER

12 Read the Lab before you start. Always follow directions.

13 Dissections – Sharp Tools Always cut away from fingers and body Always carry sharp objects with points and tips facing down and away Never try to catch falling sharp instruments Grasp sharp instruments only by the handles

14 Waste Materials Everyday Trash Classroom trash can or recycle bins Broken Glass DO NOT THROW IN TRASHDO NOT THROW IN TRASH Give to teacher to dispose Chemicals DO NOT POUR DOWN THE SINKDO NOT POUR DOWN THE SINK Pour is specified containers

15 Respect the Lab! No playing around Treat specimens humanely
