2 HISTORY www.socialworkleadership.org 2001-2006 Boston University School of Social developed the GEM (Geriatric Education Model) Program A one year, field-based Aging training model comprised of a field placement split between two “Aging” agencies A monthly seminar taught by participating field instructors. Each year, 4-6 students participated in the program and received small stipends. These students were either already interested in aging or were encouraged to consider the field and understand the demographics.

3 HISTORY www.socialworkleadership.org 2006-2009 HPPAE Cohort 2 Adapted previous model to HPPAE Primary placement in one agency 80% of placement time Enrichment placement in second agency 2-4 hours a week Monthly seminar on topics in Aging 6 students in 2006-7, 9 students in 2007-8 and 12 students in 2008-9 I year program for either advanced or foundation year Evaluation

5 Sustaining Post-HPPAE Program www.socialworkleadership.org Supportive Dean - 10 hours for director’s time Existing fund used for small stipends Well liked program, increased applicant pool Preserved strong history of Aging in school Connected to Alums and agencies in Aging Opportunities for continued collaboration through SWLI and HPPAE Programs, program evaluation and presentations at meetings

6 2012-13 Sustained Program www.socialworkleadership.org 24 foundation and advanced year MSW students in program 5 students in Advanced second year in program option with leadership projects Concurrent primary and enrichment placements in 2 agencies Smaller stipends spread to more students Monthly seminar with expert speakers Pre and post competency evaluation, exit questionnaires and reflection pieces
