Reacting Metals with Water and Oxygen L.O: To be able to describe how similar metals react with water and oxygen and why noble gases don’t react Tuesday, 24 November 2015
2
Reaction of Group 1 metals with water For each of the metals in the next demonstration record what you observe What did you observe (see) when the metals reacted with water on the videos?
3
Metals and water – general equation Potassium and sodium are metals that react vigorously with water even when a small amount of each metal is used.
4
When a metal reacts with water, the products are a metal hydroxide and hydrogen gas. What is the general equation for the reaction of a metal with water? Now try to write word equations for the metals you saw react metalwater metal hydroxide hydrogen
5
sodium and oxygen video clip potassium and oxygen video clip
6
What is the product of this reaction? What other reactions do you think would be similar to this? Na OO
7
Metals and oxygen – general equation metaloxygen metal oxide When a metal does react with oxygen, the product is a metal oxide. What is the general equation for the reaction of a metal with oxygen? Try to write word and symbol equations for 3 alkali metals
8
Will a helium balloon react with oxygen? Do other elements react in the same way as these alkali metals? What do you think?
9
Using your periodic table can you come up with a theory why alkali metals react well and other elements like helium and other noble gases don’t?
10
Why are alkali metals stored in oil? Why do alkali metals get stored in a locked cupboard? Why are schools only allowed small pieces of alkali metal? Why aren’t pupils allowed to use the metals? Why would an alkali metal burn your skin if it jumped out of the water trough when reacting?
