1 Women In Anglo- Saxon culture By: Lei’Neal Howard Audria Husted Phill Stark 1L.H

2 Marriages Unlike marriages today Anglo- Saxon marriages and home life were just as public and their business lives. Everyone in the community knew each others affairs, therefore any problems within the marriage, the people of the community took it upon themselves to settle the problems. It wasn’t the husband and wife, but the problem of the whole community 2L.H

3 Rights Within Marriage Gifts at the time of marriage were occasionally given from husband to wife. Often a large amount of money or land Anglo- Saxon women were not forced to marry a man whom she disliked. Many marriage contracts made it clear that who a women was marrying was chosen by herself. 4 Arranged Marriages Some un married women inherited land at birth, which lead to many arranged marriages for land Sometimes parents arranged marriages that were solemnized while children were still babies. There were many cases of 8 yr olds marrying each other; as well as 14 yr olds marrying 7 yr olds Kids could get a divorce but most were pressured to into staying in the marriage because of the land L.H 4

5 When a family would inherit gifts, it always referred to the “will.” There were no preferences to men like there was to the woman. Brothers and sister could inherit from each other.

7 Peace Weaves Peace weavers was a specific type of arranged marriage. The term “Peace weave” means exactly what it says. It was a role of a noble women to a noble man from a rival tribe or clan L.H 7

8 Daily Life A woman's daily life style depended on her social class as well as regional and period differences. “Wife” might be connected with weaving which would be cloth- making or embroiders.
