Purdue Teacher Education and P-12 Assessment Foundational Assessment Professional Development Applied Assessment

Foundational Assessment 1.Adopt the Joint Committee on Standards for Educational Evaluation’s (JCSEE) Classroom Assessment Standards: Sound Assessment Practices for PK-12 Teachers as a framework for guiding the improvement of curricula, instruction and candidate assessments related to P-12 student assessment. 2.Teach foundational assessment content in a stand-alone assessment course 3.Embed additional assessment content within Blocks I and II courses for all teacher education candidates. Incorporate assessment into TIP experiences 4.Move EDPS 23500 to Block I, and EDCI 28500 to Block II in order to introduce early assessment that is built upon in EDPS 26500 5.All teacher education candidates should take the assessment and block courses early in their programs of study

Applied Assessment 1.Faculty members in each disciplinary area should examine and map JSCSEE assessment standards to each of their courses. 2.Prior to practicum and student teaching, each candidate must demonstrate preplanning mastery 3.Within each disciplinary area, require a comprehensive portfolio or capstone project 4.Candidates should develop a greater sense of the cultural and ethical nuances of assessment 5.Candidates and graduates would be encouraged to foster learning-centered approaches to understanding and incorporating assessment practices into their instructional skill-set

Professional Development Develop assessment related electronic instructional modules for candidates in initial and advanced graduate teacher education programs, P-12 professionals, volunteer Purdue faculty, and graduate instructors. Make use of the Passport platform for advanced candidates and professional educators seeking professional development to earn Digital Badges as they complete modules in assessment content Allow for Professional Growth Points (PGPs) to be earned by practicing teachers for professional development

Activity Identify three main purposes for classroom assessment. Where and how do you currently teach foundational assessment content? Assessment literacy is defined as an understanding of the principles of sound assessment. Identify what and how you currently teach assessment literacy skills in your program area. What recommendations would you add to those already made by the task force?
