In closed primaries, only declared members of a party are allowed to vote for that party’s nominees. Most states award the party’s nomination to the candidate who receives a plurality of votes. When no candidate gains a required majority, the party holds a runoff primary between the top two vote-getters.

Each party chooses its convention delegates through a combination of primary elections and caucuses. All voters in a precinct cast their ballots at the same voting place. The direct primary is an election in which voters choose candidates to represent each party in a general election.

Representatives from every state make up a political party’s national committee. The Green Party opposes the power of corporations and favors decision making at the grassroots level.

In open primaries, voters need not declare their party preference to vote for the party’s nominees. Independent candidates can get on most states’ ballots by petition
