LOCAL PARTNERS IN NNIP The defining functions u Building and operating information systems with integrated and recurrently updated data on neighborhood conditions u Facilitating and promoting the direct practical use of data by community and city leaders in community building and local policy making u Emphasizing the use of information to build the capacities of institutions and residents in distressed neighborhoods.

1. INFORMING LOCAL POLICY Cross-site initiatives u Address real local policy issues, but in a comparable way across sites –Contribution to national dialogues –Past topics: welfare-to-work, health, prisoner re-entry u Main current topics – School readiness and success – Foreclosure crisis – Comprehensive community indicator systems – Sustainable communities evaluation u This meeting –Review lessons, further define work programs, consider extension to more partner cities and new topics

2. DEVELOPING TOOLS AND GUIDES Agenda u Spelling out our elements of practice u In process –NNIP Performance Management and Evaluation; Guide on Property Data; Guide to Local Data Sharing u Added for 2010 –Case studies and guides on “data and the foreclosure crisis” –Guide on local school readiness initiatives –Guide on comprehensive community indicator systems

3. BUILD-STRENGTHEN LOCAL CAPACITY – NEW CITIES Growth at a reasonable pace u Plan up to 4 new partners per year –Continue to receive inquiries & expressions of interest u Strategy for expansion –Work with interested candidates now identified –Special effort: Sustainable Communities cities u Start-up assistance remains modest –Initial contacts, advice, link to peers – over phone, web –Site visits and limited technical assistance

BUILD-STRENGTHEN LOCAL CAPACITY– SERVICES TO NETWORK NNIP Community of Practice u Now includes 745 persons on list-serve –Mostly individuals from cities not yet in partnership u Expanding direct peer-to-peer interaction –Web-chats, conferences u Still hope to improve web-based support –Tools to facilitate communication between partners –Electronic newsletter, project updates

BUILD-STRENGTHEN LOCAL CAPACITY– SERVICES TO NETWORK NNIP Partnership u Main peer to peer opportunities –Semi-annual face-to-face meetings –Workgroups continue via phone/email between meetings –Peer relationships developed/used outside of NNIP u Opportunities (modest) for financial assistance –Participation in cross-site initiatives, help with guides & TA u Updated excerpts from national data sets for partner metro areas (last batch sent Spring 2009) u Help with transitions, hard times locally –Call UI and each other for advice

u LISC Sustainable Communities Initiative - Operating in 10 cities (NNIP partners involved in 4) -NNIP to provide forum, analysis, help build capacity in new cities, provide supporting analysis u Community Indicators Consortium (CIC) - Charlotte Kahn & Kathy Pettit are officers -Participate: September 2009 Conference in Bellevue -Joint CIC/NNIP participation in work group on performance measurement, new joint paper: 5.
