Descriptive Writing Style Using the five senses…
2
Descriptive: writing form in which the main objective is to engage the senses and convey the essence of a character and/or place rather than plot (as in a narrative) or ideas (as in an expository essay)
3
What must we learn… 1)Terminology used on the provincial exam 2)Word association 3)Simile 4)Metaphor 5)Personification
4
What are the five senses… Touch Smell Taste Hear See
6
Terminology used on the provincial exam
7
Touch (tactile) :of, relating to, or being the sense of touch
8
Smell (olfactory) : of or relating to the sense of smell
9
Hearing (aural) :of or relating to the ear or to the sense of hearing
10
Sight (visual) : of, relating to, or used in vision
11
Taste (gustatory) : relating to or associated with eating or the sense of taste
12
Word Association
13
DESCRIBE THE FOLLOWING ONLY USING WORDS, NOT SENTENCES:
14
Aural
15
Visual
16
Gustatory
17
Olfactory
18
Tactile
19
Simile : a figure of speech comparing two unlike things that is often introduced by LIKE or AS
20
Example: Sleeping like a log
21
"Good coffee is like friendship: rich and warm and strong." (slogan of Pan-American Coffee Bureau) "Life is like an onion: You peel it off one layer at a time, and sometimes you weep." (Carl Sandburg) "She dealt with moral problems as a cleaver deals with meat." (James Joyce, "The Boarding House")
22
Metaphor : a figure of speech in which a word or phrase literally denoting one kind of object or idea is used in place of another to suggest a likeness or analogy between them
23
Her home was a prison.
24
In the above sentence, we understand immediately that her home had some of the characteristics of a prison. Mainly, we imagine, she could not leave her home. She was trapped inside. Why it was a prison we do not know, but that would be clear from the context--perhaps her husband forced her to stay at home, perhaps she was afraid of the outside. We don't know, but the rest of the story would tell us. What is important here is that in five simple words we understand a lot about her environment, how she felt and how she behaved. In this sentence, "prison" is a metaphor.
25
Personification : attribution of personal qualities. representation of a thing or abstraction as a person OR Personification can be described as a figure of speech in which an inanimate object is personified, by attributing human traits and qualities to it.
26
"Dirk turned on the car wipers, which grumbled because they didn't have quite enough rain to wipe away, so he turned them off again. Rain quickly speckled the windscreen. "He turned on the wipers again, but they still refused to feel that the exercise was worthwhile, and scraped and squeaked in protest." (Douglas Adams, The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul, 1988)
27
Your task…
28
Homework Assignment Assume the role of one of the other people in the park or place yourself in the park and, writing in the first person, describe your interactions assuming a role within the park. Make sure you note what your character thinks of “Miss Brill”. Within your writing, use imagery (at least one metaphor, simile or personification) to highlight three types of imagery: touch (tactile), smell (olfactory), hearing (aural), sight(visual), taste (gustatory) Under-line it.
