Flashless Forging Also known as true closed die forging Metal is deformed in a cavity that provides total confinement. Major Advantage : Elimination of scrap generated during flash formation. Note : An amount that is typically between 20 & 45% of the starting material is saved by this forging.

Contd…

This forging imposes requirements on process control that are more demanding than impression die. Most important is that the work volume must equal the space in the die cavity within a close tolerance. Note : Larger starting blank may cause damage to die or press because of excessive pressure requirement. Smaller blank will not fill cavity.

Contd… Because of special demands of this forging, the process lends itself best to part geometries that are simple and symmetrical. Materials : Aluminium & Magnesium (their alloys)

Contd… Forces in flashless forging reaches same value as that of impression die forging. Similar formula(of impression die forging) is used for calculation of force.

COINING Special application of closed die forging In this fine details in the die are impressed on the top and bottom surfaces of the work part. Pressure requirements are higher in this case ( value of K f = 8.0 for complex shapes ). Common application : Minting of coins This process provides good surface finish and dimensional accuracy on the work parts made by other operations.

Coining : Examples
