KS 2 Question Time Information and guidance for teachers CURRICULUM LINKS Working Scientifically Planning different types of scientific enquiry to answer questions Asking relevant questions Identifying scientific evidence to support an idea or argument Using scientific language Last updated: August 2015 Young Orangutan – inquisitive minds at Chester Zoo

LEARNING OBJECTIVES After attending this workshop all students will be able to: Remember some facts about animals in the Zoo List some of the animals they have seen during their visit Most students will be able to: Understand how knowledge can be acquired with the right questions Ask a question and remember the answer Learn and remember a new scientific word Some students will be able to: Appreciate that asking good questions can help them find things out Jaguars are great at exploring their surroundings

LESSON PLAN This workshop has been designed to work around your class projects. During the 25 minute workshop, your pupils will learn to ask questions - about ANY animal-related topic you might be studying in school. Your students will be sitting in some exciting surroundings (either a South American ranch in the ‘Spirit of the Jaguar’ exhibit, a rainforest hut in the ‘Tropical Realm’ or the Sumba Schoolroom in our new Islands development). Our very knowledgeable education staff will attempt to answer as many questions as your students can fit in to the time. For a FREE BONUS experience… Before your visit, if you are able to send us a selection of your pupils’ questions, and the topic they are studying, we will be able to bring along some relevant, and very special, artefacts for your pupils to handle and learn about. A visitor favourite: ‘Boris’ the chimpanzee

IMPORTANT NOTE Some Discovery Workshops MAY include a selection of bio-artefacts. Please inform us in advance of any allergies or phobias that may be affected by this. An antibacterial foam hand wash will be offered to all students at the end of the session. In order for this to be effective, teachers are asked to ensure that all students have clean hands on arrival at the venue. SUGGESTIONS FOR YOUR VISIT BEFORE YOUR VISIT To maximise the learning potential of your trip – Decide what topic you’d like your pupils to learn more about. Get your pupils to decide what questions would be most interesting to ask – and make sure they bring them along. PLAN A ROUTE This is a bespoke workshop, if you’d like to know what species are relevant to your topic and where to find them in the zoo, just ask a member of the education team when you book your workshop. Alternatively, you can arrange a FREE pre-visit of your own to scope out the Zoo. Ask for details when you call to arrange your workshop. Tuatara at Chester Zoo’s Tropical Realm

DURING YOUR VISIT Use the educational signs around the Zoo to gather more information for your class project Get your students to draw or photograph their favourite animals DID YOU KNOW? A selection of curriculum-linked self-led Explorer Trails are available to download at http://www.chesterzoo.org/WhatWeDo/Educat ion/Explorer%20Programme.aspx http://www.chesterzoo.org/WhatWeDo/Educat ion/Explorer%20Programme.aspx AFTER YOUR VISIT Now that your pupils have explored the Zoo and discovered new information, why not get them to present their findings? There are many ways of doing this – some groups could make a colourful poster, write and illustrate a story, make their own quiz or poem – we’re sure your pupils will find this is a fun way to revisit the facts they’ve learnt with us. This is also a great way for them to practice their presentation, literacy or numeracy skills! A Crowned Pigeon near the Tropical Realm hut
