COLLEGE DAY Planning for college is important and fun.

COLLEGE BULLETIN  The bulletin is your guide to life at college  The bulletin holds the answers to everything from classes, requirements for degrees and majors, campus clubs and organizations, and how to resolve conflicts  Usually given at orientation – paper/CD/online versions  See if you can find your school’s.

Checking Requirements  General Ed/University Program –2 years of classes –Courses in different areas –Even if you are given a “program” does not mean only options.  Competency Requirements –Most schools require this in Writing – some in Computers. Some even in swimming.  Degrees offered –B.A.; B.S.; M.A.; M.F.A.; etc.  Majors/Minors –If you have one in mind, check requirements  AP Credits  Drop, Add, Audit –What is the deadline for dropping a class?  Dean’s List –It’s “good” to make this dean’s list. What GPA do you need?  Double-Counting Classes –Gives you freedom to choose  Financial Aid  Scholarships  Grading scale –What is their grading scale?

This is one book that is worth reading and rereading Keep your copy Revisit it often It is your guide to the ins and outs of college Some of you may want to plan out your entire four years – www.schedulizer.com

Other considerations  Money –Registration –Books –Blue-books –Application fees –Diploma –Certificate –Transcripts  Housing –Dorms/Apartments –Contracts – read carefully  Cars –Parking –Convenience –Cost  Safety  Clubs/Organizations  Campus life – what goes on?  Calendar –When are your breaks?  Get involved

 TIME TO FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS  College is more than a means to an end –. "A mind is a fire to be kindled, not a vessel to be filled." - Plutarch – Make the most of it. – You will never be poorer, but you will never be more free.

COMING HOME/MANAGING HOME  Separation –Calling/facebook/email/text ing –Visiting home –Having family visit  Going home –Remember – you are not a tenant at home – and they are not your maids, butler, rental agency. –Be respectful –Anticipate contrast in college and home.  Communication  Stress  Time management  It is okay to say “No.”  You do not have to do EVERYTHING all at once. And you can’t – well.  This is your time! Use it well.

GOOD LUCK  Please keep in touch  Let me/other teachers know if we helped, if we missed something.  I still read essays, write recommendations, take visitors, make smart- aleck remarks on facebook.

HUNGER  CHICKEN CHEESE DIP   1 package Philly cream cheese  1 package (2 cups) Mexican cheese – with pepper jack – or shred and blend cheddar and pepper jack  1 jar salsa – as hot as you like it  2-3 shredded pieces of chicken  1 jar of green chilies (hot or mild – your choice)   In skillet, melt the cream cheese, adding the other cheese.  When mostly shredded, add the salsa, chilies, and then the chicken.  Store overnight and reheat for serving.   Note – you can also throw it all into a crock pot and let it cook on low for a couple hours. I just like to fix it ahead – and it helps the seasoning.  Coming soon to a classroom you are in….

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover. - Mark Twain You are the future I have been waiting for – go become it.
