1 1. The Question The Universe is filled with galaxies of different shapes and sizes. Astronomers classify these galaxies into different types. What type of galaxy is closest neighboring Galaxy, the Andromeda? 2 2. Information Sources There are three major types of galaxy forms. Using the given sources, investigate the types and how they evolved. http://amazing- space.stsci.edu/resources/expl orations/galaxies-galore/ http://www.kidsastronomy.com/g alaxys.html http://www.windows2universe.org /the_universe/Galaxy.html Note: Image Copyright NASA, ESA, and the Hubble Heritage (STScI/AURA)-ESA/Hubble CollaborationNASAESA Hubble HeritageSTScIAURAESA 1111 2222 3333 6666 5555 4444 Next These materials are © 2011 Lauren Havelka, Towson University, all rights reserved, unless other wise stated.

3 3. The Student Activity As you look through the links, think about the different types of galaxies and what attributes they have. Think about the ways that each galaxy type is different. What types of stars do they have? How old are the galaxies? What caused each galaxy to have the shape that it does? Using the graphic to the right organize the types of galaxies and their characteristics. 4 4. The Assessment Activity So what type of galaxy is the Andromeda? Review photographs and a stats sheet of Andromeda, and decide which type of galaxy Andromeda classifies as. Write a short paragraph using at least 3 facts from the sheet and from your investigations to support your conclusion. 6 6. Teacher Support Materials Maryland Core Learning Goals  8 th Grade Science Standard 2 Earth/Space Science  D.1 : Identify and describe the components of the universe.  Objective : Identify and describe the various types of galaxies. Notes for Teachers:  Have print outs of graphic organizer and Andromeda stats sheet to hand out.  Students may work on the graphic organizer in groups or on their own. However, all students must hand in their own graphic organizer and paragraph. Time Management:  Allowi 10 minutes to present lesson and answer questions, 25 minutes for students to fill out graphic organizer, and 25 minutes to write paragraph. 1111 2222 3333 6666 5555 4444 These materials are © 2011 Lauren Havelka, Towson University, all rights reserved, unless other wise stated.
