1-1 Integers and Algebraic Expressions Aim: How can we write algebraic expressions and evaluate them using the order of operations? CCSS: 6.EE.2.c
2
Warm up Word PhraseAlgebraic Expressions 3 more than a number a number increased by 3 The quotient of a number and 8 6 times a number The product of 6 and a number 15 less than a number 15 subtracted from a number Translate word phrases into algebraic expressions:
3
Example 1: Writing an expression An object’s weight on Mars is 0.38 times the object’s weight in Earth. Write an algebraic expression for an object’s weight on Mars. A variable is a symbol, usually a letter, that represents one or more numbers. An algebraic expression is a mathematical phrase that uses numbers, variables, and operations.
4
Example 2: Evaluating an algebraic expression Evaluate n – 5 for n=27 To evaluate an algebraic expression, replace each variable with a number and then simplify.
5
Example 3: Using the order of operations Evaluate n + (13 – n) ÷ 5 for n = 3 To Simplify a numerical expression, replace it with its simplest name
6
Example 4: Application: Fitness A fitness club charges $100 to join and $33 for each month. Write an expression for the total cost. Find the cost for 6 months of memberships. Think, Pair, Share
7
Pair Work Vocabulary: What is the difference between an algebraic expression and a numerical expression. Mental Math: Evaluate the expression 4x for x = 12. Math each word phrase with expression There are two fewer guests. A. m + 2 There are half as many cars. B. n ÷ 2 There are two more books. C. p - 2

Exit Ticket 1.An internet service provider charges $25 for a connection fee and then $16 per month. Write an expression to model the total cost and then evaluate the expression for 1 to 5 months of internet access. 2.How do you evaluate an algebraic expression? 3.What does the order of operations state?
