Magna Carta – (Great Charter) Magna means great or big Carta – means charter A charter is document that is issued by a ruler or government that states the rules and guidelines they will follow.

King John reigned (ruled) England from 1199 to 1216 3 things that John did that made the nobles and church dislike him. 1. Lost English lands to France 2. Treated the Nobles Bad – A. heavy taxes on nobles B. Arrested nobles that he thought were his enemies 3. Argued with church officials and confiscated (took away) church lands

In June of 1215 angry barons (nobles) insisted on (forced) a meeting with King John to demand that he sign a document that gave more rights to the church and nobles.

The Magna Carta was an agreement between King John, the nobles, and the church. King John’s Benefits: - got to keep his throne - got the nobles to re- pledge their loyalty to the king - church also continued to back King John Nobles and Church Benefits: - King promised to consult the nobles and the church before imposing special taxes - no free man could be jailed unless they received a trial before a judge and jury. This was the idea of Habeas Corpus. (latin for have body or produce the body)

Why important ? - It meant that no person, even the King, was above the law. - Laid the foundation for more people having rights and power in government. - start of democracy (people rule the government) in medieval / modern times.
