Conditional Statements Chapter 2 Section 2

Conditional Statement A statement where a condition has to be met for a particular outcome to take place More commonly known as “If Then Statements”

Hypothesis The part of a conditional statement that must happen to trigger a certain affect. It is denoted by a “p”

Conclusion The part of a conditional statements that happens as a result of the hypothesis. It is denoted by a “q”

Conditional Statement in Symbols If p then q

Inductive Reasoning Reasoning based on patterns you observe.

Conjecture A conclusion reached using inductive reasoning. It’s sort of like a hypothesis only instead of using the scientific method, you just use inductive reasoning.

Counter Example An example that shows the conjecture is incorrect.

Truth Value Whether a conditional statement is true or false.

Page 90 in the Textbook Look at Problem 3

Negation The opposite of a statement The opposite of a statement “p” would be written as ~p and is read “not p”.

Manipulations of A Conditional Statement 1.Converse 2.Inverse 3.Contrapositive

Converse Flip the hypothesis and the conclusion. If it is raining outside, then I will get wet. Converse: If I get wet, then it is raining outside.

Inverse Negate both the hypothesis and the conclusion If it is raining outside, then I will get wet. Inverse: If it is not raining outside, then I will not get wet.

Contrapositive Negate the hypothesis and the conclusion of the converse. If it is raining outside, then I will get wet. Converse: If I get wet, then it is raining outside. Contrapositive: If I do not get wet, then it is not raining outside.

Equivalent Statement Conditional statements with the same truth value. Look at the chart at the bottom of page 91.
