School ICT Learning programmes Module 3 Workshop 3

Focus question Can ICT enhance and extend learning?

School uses of ICT Administrative  Office tools  EMIS  Email circulars  Learning area  Computer Studies (HG) / Information Technology  Computer Studies (SG) / Computyping / Computer Applications Technology (CAT)  Learning resource  Integrated with learning activities in the classroom / computer room – Skills learnt in context – Specialised applications for learning areas (science probes, GIS, maths interactive) – Content and tutorials – Information sources (Internet, CDs) – Communications (Email)  (ICT Literacy)

Developing with ICT ICT supporting learning  mostly application, practice and reinforcement of existing learning  impact minimal  few ICT skills learnt ICT enhancing learning  makes an impact on teaching strategies and styles  ICT offers opportunities beyond the normal classroom teaching  learners learning new skills e.g. information handling skills, thinking skills, relevant ICT skills ICT extending learning  activities which may be difficult without ICT  supplement by high level of learning skills development e.g. problem solving, higher order thinking, collaboration, independent learning

What do you do at your school? Form groups of three. Share with each other about the nature of ICT use at your school.  Is ICT used for administrative purposes? If so in what way?  Do you offer IT as a subject in any form? If so, how does offering IT as a subject affect the access to IT by other learners?  Do you have issues with equitable access?  How do teachers use ICT to support or enhance their teaching?  How do you think the use of ICT at your school can improve? (15 min) What do you notice about the similarities and differences? Report back to a brief whole group session. (10 min)

ICT Literacy Dimensions of ICT Literacy ICT Literacy programme for learners at your school  Evaluate the programme using the programme evaluation tool. (10min) Meet in groups of four. Brainstorm a list of contexts that will be meaningful learners using ICT. (10 min) Meet as a whole group. Compile a common list. (10 min) Course workbook: record the list (10 min)

Using ICT to achieve critical outcomes ICT and critical outcomes Work in pairs. Look at various ways in which teachers use ICT in the classroom. (30 min)  How does this activity support curriculum outcomes, including critical cross-curricular outcomes  Are the learners required to use higher order thinking skills ? (critical outcomes 1, 4, 5, 7)  Do the learners make decisions and solve problems? (critical outcomes 1, 7)  Do the learners work in groups? (critical outcomes 2, 3)  Are the learners required to take some responsibility in managing their learning? (critical outcomes 3)  Will learners be required to work critically with information and produce their own information? (critical outcomes 4)  Will learners be required to communicate their thoughts and ideas in some way? (critical outcomes 5)  Will learners collaborate with other learners locally and abroad? (critical outcomes 2, 5, 6, 7)  Will learners use ICT or other technologies during learning? (critical outcomes 6)  Are learners encouraged to think critically and investigate issues in depth? (critical outcomes 7)  Are learners encouraged to examine issues in their local community, regionally and globally? (critical outcomes 7)

higher order thinking skills  Are the learners required to use higher order thinking skills ? (critical outcomes 1, 4, 5, 7) make decisions and solve problems  Do the learners make decisions and solve problems? (critical outcomes 1, 7) groups  Do the learners work in groups? (critical outcomes 2, 3) responsibility  Are the learners required to take some responsibility in managing their learning? (critical outcomes 3) work critically with information  Will learners be required to work critically with information and produce their own information? (critical outcomes 4) communicate  Will learners be required to communicate their thoughts and ideas in some way? (critical outcomes 5) collaborate  Will learners collaborate with other learners locally and abroad? (critical outcomes 2, 5, 6, 7) use ICT  Will learners use ICT or other technologies during learning? (critical outcomes 6) think critically  Are learners encouraged to think critically and investigate issues in depth? (critical outcomes 7) examine issues in their local community  Are learners encouraged to examine issues in their local community, regionally and globally? (critical outcomes 7)
