2003 APAN Conference Fukuoka, January 2003 3 BRIEF HISTORY (Start of TEIN) Initiative of TEIN Raised (early 2000) President KIM Dae-Jung proposed the TEIN initiative during his visit to Europe >> KR proposed the TEIN Project at ASEM/SOM as a new initiative of the ASEM-III Supported from Both Regions European Commission expressed support at the 15th Korea-EU Ministerial Meeting (July) NREN of Europe stated support (July) APAN also joined this support (September) Japan agreed to cooperate for the TEIN project at the Korea-Japan Summit Meeting in the framework of ASEM (September)

2003 APAN Conference Fukuoka, January 2003 4 BRIEF HISTORY (ASEM-3 & EGM-1) Endorsed at ASEM III Summit (Oct. 2000) ASEM Leaders - recognized the importance of cooperation in IT - agreed to narrow the digital divide to promote the joint prosperity of two regions - emphasized the need to establish and expand information and research networks TEIN.EGM-1 (Mar. 2001) Preliminary presentations and discussions exchanged 1st Phase of TEIN launched (Dec. 2001) - KR & FR/EU realized early basis for the development of TEIN between RENATER & KOREN

2003 APAN Conference Fukuoka, January 2003 5 BRIEF HISTORY (EGM-2 & ASEM-4) TEIN EGM-2 (Mar. 2002) - For Europe-Asia ASEM linkage, KR-FR linkage will be continued & upgraded to 45Mbps - Intra-Asia connectivity will also be set at 45Mbps, and direct linkages will be established between KR and JP, CN and an ASEM partner from SEA. - An ASEM partner from SEA will serve as a hub for the ASEAN members of ASEM EC, FR, MY, KR, DANTE etc. (Sep. 2002) MY expressed its willingness to be a SEA hub ASEM-IV Summit (Sep. 2002) ASEM leaders decided that EGM on Expansion of TEIN to Malaysia as SEA hub will be held in Kuala Lumpur, in the first half of 2003

2003 APAN Conference Fukuoka, January 2003 6 BRIEF HISTORY (Recent Improvements) KR-JP APII Testbed (NEA) - issues of upgrading the capacity and cooperation of research & other applications are being discussed - to be upgraded to 1Gbps from 8Mbps TEIN Expansion Links (SEA) - MY confirmed its willingness to be a SEA hub and SOMs between KR-MY have been followed - KR introduced TEIN project & TEIN Expansion Links to SEA to ASEAN region at EAWG 13

2003 APAN Conference Fukuoka, January 2003 7 SPIRIT OF TEIN Objectives of TEIN are to: - contribute to enhancing exchanges and cooperation between Asia & Europe through increased & more effective information flows - enhance & diversify research exchanges and cooperation between Asia & Europe - expand and diversify speedier & more powerful connections between Asia & Europe (ASEM-3)
