1 Biomes of the World Marine Salt Water Coniferous Forest Savanna

2 Name: Fresh Water Location: ponds, lakes, streams, rivers, wetlands (marshes, swamps) all over the world; special ecosystem is estuaries – where fresh water and salt water mix (mouth of rivers) Climate: shallow water is warm with lots of sunlight, some lakes are very deep with cold water; winds mix layers and circulate O 2, ponds and lakes can freeze in winter; many rivers begin with mountain snowmelt making them very cold and clear at the source, warmer and muddier at the mouth Plants: algae, moss, phytoplankton, water lilies, cattails; cypress, birch, willow trees in wetlands

4 The Nile River The Nile, the world’s longest river, flows northward through the eastern Sahara Desert. Water from the Nile is used for irrigation of surrounding farmland. Irrigation - transporting water for crops

8 Amazon River The Amazon River is the 2 nd longest in the world! It’s length reaches 4,195 miles. It’s temperatures usually reach as high as 90 0 F in summer but can fall below freezing during winter. It contributes 20% of the world’s freshwater into the ocean. The river is home to many odd creatures including anacondas, piranhas, & pink river dolphins. The river is the “highway of the Amazon” used for transporting people and goods throughout South America.

9 Animals: zooplankton, insect eggs, amphibians, fish, birds (ducks, swans, flamingos), crustaceans,, turtles, snakes Biodiversity: very diverse with over 15,000 species of fish; underwater breathing with gills; humans are completely dependent on this biome to survive Human Impact: pollution from runoff or sewage, overfishing, introducing non-native species

14 TEKS 7.10B Describe how biodiversity contributes to the sustainability of an ecosystem. Which biome has the most biodiversity? Which biome has the least biodiversity? How does biodiversity affect the sustainability of each biome? The more diverse (more living things), the more stable a biome is. The more plants and animals there are, the more food choices are available. As biodiversity increases, sustainability also increases. (same for decreasing) Biodiversity Sustainability Biodiversity Sustainability Marine and Tropical Rain Forest Tundra
