Analyzing the shape of Data By: Nigel N., Ivory R., Natalie S.

Vocabulary  Skewed- graphed data has one peak that is not in the center  Uniform- graphed data is roughly the same for each interval  Symmetric- is when a vertical line can divide graphed data into two parts that are close to mirror images.  Outlier- Data that is much greater or less than the other data values.  Standard deviation- This measures the spread of a data set.

Activity 1  When a data has an outlier, the median is often the best measure of central tendency to describe the data, and the interquartile range the best measure of variation. When data are graphed, you can examine the shape and spread of the data and determine if there are any outliers. The shape and spread of the graph will help you to identify the best measures of central tendency and variation.

Uniform Graph

Symmetric Graph

Skewed Graph

Problem 1 What graph is this ?  A. Uniform  B. Symmetric  C. Skewed

Problem 2 Place the correct letter for the definition of that word.  ____- graphed data is roughly the same for each interval  ____- Data that is much greater or less than the other data values.  ____- graphed data has one peak that is not in the center  ____-This measures the spread of a data set.  ____- is when a vertical line can divide graphed data into two parts that are close to mirror images. Answer key A. Symmetric B. Uniform C. Skewed D. Outlier E. Standard Deviation
