The Gospel of Matthew The Scribes & Pharisees 23:1-39 Three Problems: – “They say and do not do” (3). – “They bind heavy burdens” (4). – “They do to be seen by men” (5).

The Gospel of Matthew The Scribes & Pharisees “They do to be seen by men” (5-14) – Phylacteries (straps on arms and forehead with Scriptures written on them – Dt 6:8). – “Rabbi” – “Father” – “Master” (Gr. kathegetes – “guide, leader”). – Make long prayers (cf. Matthew 6:7).

The Gospel of Matthew The Scribes & Pharisees “They bind heavy burdens.” (15-24) – Proselytes - “son of hell” (cf. Mt 15:1-6). – Oaths and the value of things (Mt 5:33-37). – Tithing spices – neglecting “weightier matters” – “These you ought to have done without leaving the others undone”
