2 Belief and Devotion  Medieval people believed in religious signs and meanings  The primary religion during the Medieval times was Christianity  Almost all western Europeans were devoutly Christian  Good vs. Evil ; Heaven and Hell  Forgiveness  Success and Failure; sickness and health; rain or drought  King Harold

3 God's Plan  God's Blessing  Acceptance...of status, of faith, of everything  Grow closer to God  Monasteries and Convents  Hermits

4 The Church  The Catholic Church was the ONLY religious institution in Europe (which made it very powerful)  Excommunication = certain hell  Held power over everyone (monarchy included)  Brought balance to Medieval Life – Church+State = Equal  Provided religious and desperate need

6 The Church cont.  Taxes (tithe) were paid by way of money or crops  Some churches had their own land...remember land=money  Ecclesiastical Career vs. Routine Village Life

7 Monastic Life  Men: Monasteries  Women: Convents or Nunneries  Life of work and prayer  Vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience  No speaking  Food was simple, comforts few  Free time
