Belief and Devotion Medieval people believed in religious signs and meanings The primary religion during the Medieval times was Christianity Almost all western Europeans were devoutly Christian Good vs. Evil ; Heaven and Hell Forgiveness Success and Failure; sickness and health; rain or drought King Harold

The Church The Catholic Church was the ONLY religious institution in Europe (which made it very powerful) Excommunication = certain hell Held power over everyone (monarchy included) Brought balance to Medieval Life – Church+State = Equal Provided religious and desperate need

Monastic Life Men: Monasteries Women: Convents or Nunneries Life of work and prayer Vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience No speaking Food was simple, comforts few Free time
