Personality Disorders and Suicide Personality disorders are estimated to have been present in 30% of completed suicides and 40% of attempted suicides. Suicide occurs disproportionately in cluster B personality disorders. The rates of completed suicide in patients with borderline and antisocial personality disorders are 8% to 10% and 5%, respectively. Patients with borderline personality disorder have very high rates of suicide attempts (60%-75%). Self-injurious and self-mutilating behaviors are common in borderline personality disorder (e.g., cutting oneself) but much of the time do not represent suicide attempts. Cluster C personality disorders account for about 10% of completed suicides, and cluster A personality disorders account for less than 1% of completed suicides. 23
