15 Jiang Qing One of the most influential women in Mao's government was his wife, Jiang Qing. As a young woman, Jiang worked as an actress and became politically active in the communist movement. In 1939 she married Mao, who was at the time establishing himself as the leading figure of the Chinese communist Party. Politically, Jiang remained in the background until 1963, when she took charge of a cultural reform movement that reworked traditional Chinese drama and ballet so that they contained proletarian motifs. By 1296 Mao granted Jiang sweeping powers, which she used to almost completely eliminate many long-standing cultural traditions. Jiang fell out of favor after Mao's death. Mao's successors convicted Jiang and three others--the Gang of Four--of causing the mass civil unrest that occurred during the Cultural Revolution. Jiang died in prison, reportedly a suicide.
