What is it? A private cloud platform providing Oracle databases on-demand to the UB community. UB's database as a service (DBaaS) offering. It’s an extension of the existing enterprise level database hosting currently offered.
7
Why do we need our DBs in the UB cloud? Users provision a database when they need it…not dependent on CIT’s timetable. It allows users to concentrate on their core business! Save money...who doesn't want more money? Save time...who couldn't use a bit more time? Data is secure and available when needed. Improvement over user’s current DB environment
8
Database Provisioning Comparison Laptop – read docs – download software – cross fingers – database – Hey Bill...have you seen my laptop? Departmental Server – read docs – post to listserv - hey...anybody know how to install DB Server software – download software – cross fingers – database – Crap! The server's down again. CIT Hosted – submit request – make your case – wait in the queue – database UB on Cloud 9 – Login to the Self Service portal – choose your DB template – database
14
Who can use UB on Cloud 9? IT nodes - departmental applications and data Researchers Academics - faculty, students Organizations - student and faculty groups Non-enterprise Applications
15
How do we manage this magic cloud? Oracle Enterprise Manager 12cOracle Enterprise Manager 12c with Cloud Management Pack..of course!Cloud Management Pack – Self Service Portal – Provisioning – Leverage patching to be pushed out on a schedule – Setup role-based access and privileges – Set quotas to limit over-consumption – Set metering and chargeback on consumed resources

Details Assume we have 12c installed and running. EIS plans to upgrade to EM 12c within one year. Use existing DB infrastructure and expand as needed. Build new RAC with one or two nodes ($13,000 per node – x86 HP hardware). EM Cloud Management Pack – SUNY license or direct from Oracle Staff resources needed: initial implementation assuming existing hardware – 120-160 hours of DBA time
