5 The Yuan Dynasty The Yuan Dynasty was the ruling authority in China, as established by the Mongols, from This was the first time in Chinese history that foreigners controlled China. Yuan was the name chosen by Kublai Khan, a grandson of Genghis Khan. Mongol attempts to subdue China began as early as They were finally realized in 1279 when Kublai Khan’s army was successful and he declared himself to be emperor. Ironically, although he was not Chinese, he is considered to be one of China’s great emperors. Why was this so? Prior to Mongol conquest, China was divided into three political areas. They had diverse languages, writing systems, and patterns of government.
