Compounds Unit 2 Chemistry

How do bonds form? Electrons want to be surrounded by eight valance electrons at all times How do they do this:  Atoms join together where they can either steal, donate or share electrons with other atoms Typically if it less than 4 electrons will donate them and more than 4 will steal or share them

Ionic bonds If a metal and non-metals form a bond, the metal will donate electrons and the non-metal will steal them  This is called an IONIC BOND

Ionic Bonds

Covalent bonds If two non-metals form a bond then the electrons will be shared between the two atoms  this is called a COVALENT BOND

Video Clip

examples Name that Bond: NaCl CO 2 SiO 2 Fe 2 O 3 CuO

Polyatomic compounds While polyatomic compounds are usually covalent, when they are in a compound with another atom, it is considered ionic Ex: CaSO 4, NaOH, Al 2 (CO 3 ) 3, (NH 4 ) 3 PO 4 - all are ionic

assignment Identify the bond
