Objectives Given a picture of a grip, a student should identify the pitch being thrown with 90% accuracy. Given an example speed of a pitch, a student must identify the pitch being thrown with 90% accuracy. Given an exam with reasons being offered for why pitchers throw different pitches, a student must identify and actively learn those reasons with 100% accuracy.

Four Seam Fastball Most Common Pitch Average Speed= 89-91 MPH Can be thrown at speeds of 100 MPH or more Pitch has little movement A very straight pitch Back to Instructional Menu

Two Seam Fastball The second most used pitch Pitch sinks and moves (more movement than a four seam fastball) Average Speed: 89-91 MPH Also can be known as a Sinker due to its downward trajectory Back to Instructional Menu

Curveball Used to throw off the timing of the hitter. Average speed is about 10 mph less than the average speed of a fastball. It looks like a fastball, but the grip of the baseball slows it down Back to Instructional Menu

Knuckleball Uncommon Pitch Unique pitch can transform a pitcher’s career “Dances” The dancing motion makes it difficult for the hitter to follow the path of the ball Average speed: 50-70 MPH Back to Instructional Menu

Slider Faster than a curve ball but slower than a fastball Tight spin produces a late, lateral break Average speed is 4-6 MPH slower than a fastball Pitch can cut in on the hitter’s hands preventing solid contact Back to Instructional Menu

Change-up Used to throw off the timing of the hitter. Average speed is 10 MPH less than the average speed of a fastball. Thrown like a fast ball; however, the grip slows down the initial velocity out of the hand causing the pitch to be thrown at a slower speed. Back to Instructional Menu

Forkball The grip is the same as a two-seam fastball but with a the pointer and index fingers spread farther apart Pitch has a downward action Effective pitches finish at the bottom of the strike zone (sometimes in the dirt) Average Speed: about 85 MPH Back to Instructional Menu

Why do pitchers throw different pitches? Throw of the timing of the hitter Move the ball vertically or laterally Trick the hitter into making a poor swing

Why do pitchers throw different pitches: Speed Throwing a pitch with a grip designed to yield a higher velocity could cause the hitter to swing late. Throwing a pitch with a grip designed to yield a lower velocity could cause the hitter to swing early. Example: Fastball Example: Change-up
