CONCERN: Weekly amount of garbage being disposed by Child Nutrition as #10 cans increased over the past three years with more fruits and vegetables added to menu by USDA guideline updates.
3
WHAT TO DO: Seek resources for recycling of plastic milk bottles and #10 cans.
4
HOW TO DO: Each week the Child Nutrition van makes rounds to each of our school sites and picks up #10 cans that have been rinsed, dried and bagged. Plastic milk bottles are collected daily in the milk recycling bin provided by SUDIA. City of Phenix City collects and recycles in city bins.
5
Currently 11 school sites 6,669 Students Weekly average load = $50.00 - $60.00 Total collected 2012-2013 = $2,400.00 * Some weeks we have 2 van trips depending on the menu.
6
WHERE DOES THE MONEY GO: Back to Child Nutrition! A wellness account was set up to deposit these funds which helps with National School Breakfast Week, National School Lunch Week, CNP Employee Recognition, and other special occasions. * Price is paid per pound and vanries weekly, but average price per pound is 10₵.
7
BENEFIT: Recycling has been fun, creative way for CNP to conduct and pay for events and activities for school sites. Great team work to achieve these goals, but more importantly reducing landfill waste.
