Naming Polyatomic Ions

Warm Up EQ: How do we write the names and symbols of polyatomic compounds? HOT Q1: What are the rules for name  formula? HOT Q2: What are the rules for formula  name? HOT Q3: What are some common polyatomic ions? WORKSHEET #2 OUT! 1. Write the name for S7O3 2. Write the name for NaCl.

Agenda Warm Up Agenda Naming Game - 15 Polyatomic Compounds - 20
Polyatomic Practice– 45 Exit Ticket – 10 QUIZ TOMORROW AND TEST THURSDAY WORKSHEET #3 is HW

Sorting Activity for Nomenclature
How can you identify a compound as a molecular compound? How can you identify a compound as an ionic compound?

Molecular or Ionic?

Live Poll!

What’s in a name? You can use your notes! Part I: 1. You have 10 different compounds . Divide them into two different piles of Compounds: Molecular or Ionic 2. Get Ms. Hoffman to check and see if they are in the right piles 3. Once these piles are checked, convert the symbols to names or the names to symbols on the table in the handout.

Example

Polyatomic Ions Not all Ions exist as singularly charged elements.
Notes Polyatomic Ions Not all Ions exist as singularly charged elements. Some ions contain more than one element These ions are called polyatomic ions. Contain two or more elements. Polyatomic ions bond with other elements as a group

List of Polyatomic Ions

List of Polyatomic Ions

How do you recognize a Polyatomic Ion?
Normal anions end in –ide Exception: Cyanide and Hydroxide are both polyatomic ions Polyatomic ions have more than one capital letter

Am I Polyatomic? Zinc oxide sodium carbonate Nitrogen sulfide
Lithium sulfite Magnesium cyanide potassium hydroxide Silver fluoride

Am I Polyatomic? BaSO4 Li2O Fe2 (SO4) 3 Na2CO3 CoBr2 NaCl AlF3

Notes Formula  Name KCN Using your periodic table and Polyatomic Ion chart, break it down into its cation and anion 2. Write the names of each part, then put them together

NaSO3

Al(HCO3)3

LiOH

MgSO3

Name  Formula Magnesium Bromate
Notes Name  Formula Magnesium Bromate 1. Separate into ions using your PToE and polyatomic ion chart. 2. Put parentheses around the polyatomic ion. DO NOT TOUCH INSIDE THE PARENTHESES Swap, drop and chop charges

Partner Practice Sodium Chlorate

Potassium Hydroxide

Calcium Carbonate

Aluminum Chromate

Walking around and practicing by finding our pair

Work Time! Worksheet #3

College Credits!

Exit Ticket What is the formula for potassium Sulfate?
2. What is the name of CuNO3? QUIZ TOMORROW and TEST THURSDAY! WORKSHEET #3 IS HW
