Expository Writing An expository essay gives readers information about a specific topic.

Characteristics of Expository Writing Detailed information about a specific topic Organized Structure that logically follows the writer’s points Variety of sentence structures Transition words to connect ideas States facts -- not opinions.

An Expository Essay contains: An effective introduction that states the main idea A well-written thesis statement (the main point of the essay) Body paragraphs that provide information with specific facts, details, and examples A conclusion that wraps up the essay

In your groups: Analyze the cards Decide if they are examples of expository writing or non- examples Place each card where it goes in the T-chart Raise your hand for me to come check your answers Copy the examples into the T-chart in your journal. ***Make sure you are on task the entire time! Or we can just spend our class time copying these examples in our notes word for word. Don’t you think sitting with your classmates and sharing answers is much more fun? ***
