WU 9/8 1.How many sig. figs are in these measurements? a.3.0650 g b. 75800. L c. 53.000 mg d. 0.00065e. 0.0750 s 1.Perform the following calculations: a.2.32 + 4.793b. 6.21 – 3.47 c. 5.343 x 8.2345d. 7.21/4.564

WU 9/9 1.Fill in the following blanks to make one side equal the other: (Hint: There is a 1 in each problem) a.___ cm = ____ mb. 1 m = ___ mm c. 1 kg = _____ gd. 1 µg = ____ g e. ___ ms = ____sf. 1 Mm = ____m 2. List metric prefixes larger than the base unit. 3. List metric prefixes smaller than base unit.

3-2 Measurement All measurements have units that show what you are talking about. Units are letters that are placed after the number. What are the units in the following measurements? 13.5 s4.37 cm18 kg

Can you answer these questions? How many minutes is one class period? How many meters tall is Mr. Gonzalez? How much mass does Mr. Gonzalez have? How many slugs does this rock weigh? You have two shakes to finish the quiz?

3-2 Measurement (Units) There are many different units to measure the same quantity Ex: Length- meter, foot, inch, mile Units are a language. Having different units is like speaking a different language. EX: 4 inches x 3 meters is almost useless

3-2 Measurement To make scientific collaboration easier: – Units have been set for common measurements. – Called the SI base units (System Internationale) In your Notes… Make a Table!! Copy the first five rows of table 3.1 (You’ll need to memorize these)

3-3 Unit prefixes For very large or very small numbers: – Prefixes are used to make the numbers easier to use. – For example: – 0.000000004 m can become 4.0 nm (nanometers)

3-3 Unit prefixes For very large numbers: (memorize) PrefixSymbolConversion Factor kilo -k1 kg = 1000 g mega -M1Mg = 1,000,000 g giga -G1 Gg = 1,000,000,000 g

3-3 Unit prefixes (small numbers) PrefixSymbo l Conversion Factor deci -d1 s = 10 ds centi -c1 s = 100 cs milli -m1 s = 1,000 ms micro -μ1 s = 1,000,000 μs nano -n1 s = 1,000,000,000 ns Convert the conversion factors to scientific notation
