Fine and Gross Motor Skills

This pattern of development begins long before birth. It starts during the prenatal stage, when the baby’s head takes the lead in development. This pattern continues after birth as babies first develop some control of head movement.

An infant’s development also starts close to the trunk of the body and moves outward. First, babies simply wave their arms when they see an object they want. Later, they develop more precise hand and finger control and reach out and grasp for an object.

Babies first develop their large muscle groups---such as those in the legs, neck, arms, and torso. As they strengthen and gain control over these muscles, they learn to do increasingly complex task. Control head, to crawling, to walking.
