Print out an old frame from Google images – or you can use this one. Think of an object that you could use to make your own surrealist artwork. Use your imagination! You could paint your object, paint onto your object, photograph it, draw it – the choice is yours! Don’t forget to label your work….’This is not a….’

What can you see happening in this picture? Why is it surreal? What time of day is it? Empire of lights 1953-54

Look at these two images by Stephen Wilkes. How do you think he made them? What are the important things he had to do to get these pictures? Who do you think inspired him?

Your Day and Night Challenge You have to take two photos of the same scene taken in different light Think about what will make an interesting piece of work. It could be outside, or inside (but how can you tell the time of day?) Take two pictures from exactly the same viewpoint - this is crucial. Use a tripod if you have access to one. Print your pictures on a4 paper. When you have decided what to keep, cut out your pieces. I recommend keeping one photo complete and adding piece from the other photo on top of it. Let your imagination guide you. Lay your pieces where you want them. When you’re happy with your picture, glue down your pieces.

The Moon Has you ever saw a moon so close that you could touch it? Russian artist Leonid Tishkov and photographer Boris Bendikov have created a series of artwork titled “Private Moon”, where he give life to a man and his moon. Tishkov says that each image is a poetic tale and has written poetic verses to go with each picture. The idea for this project came from a painting of a moon in a tree by Rene Magritte. Your Task: For your sketchbooks, print out the original Magritte image, search for the Russian artist Boris Bendikov and print out your favourite one of his pictures. Explain the story behind the image. You must find a suitable image of a moon, and think of a strange landscape or situation in which to place it. You will make two pieces of work, using Adobe Photoshop, for the first one, you can find a background for your moon using google image search. For your second image you must take a photograph yourself. You must combine your images using Adobe photoshop.
