The sculptor Barbara Hepworth explored the contrast between solid form and open space. Research appropriate sources and produce your own response to Openings

2 Pieter de Hooch Pieter de Hooch was a Dutch Golden Age painter famous for his genre scenes of quiet domestic scenes with a few figures. He was a contemporary of Jan Vermeer, with whom his work shares themes and style.

5 Henri Matisse His mastery of the expressive language of colour and drawing, displayed in a body of work spanning over a half- century, won him recognition as a leading figure in modern art. Although he was initially labelled a Fauve Artist, by the 1920s he was more known as a French expressionist painter.

8 Barbara Hepworth Dame Barbara Hepworth was an English sculptor. Her work can be seen in Yorkshire where she grew up and in Cornwall where she later lived and worked. Her work exemplifies Modernism, and with such contemporaries as Ivon Hitchens, Henry Moore, Ben Nicholson, Naum Gabo she helped to develop modern art (sculpture in particular) in Britain.

12 Lucio Fontana Lucio Fontana was an Italian painter and sculptor. He was mostly known as the founder of Spatialism and his ties to Arte Povera. From 1949 on he started the so-called Spatial Concept or slash series, consisting of holes or slashes on the surface of monochrome paintings, drawing a sign of what he named "an art for the Space Age".
