EXCRETORY SYSTEM What is the function of the Excretory System? – to remove metabolic wastes from the body What is a Metabolic Waste? –A Waste produced by cells during metabolism What are the Metabolic Wastes? –CO 2, H20, heat, urea, salts nitrogen waste
3
What organs are involved in Excretion? –Kidneys, lungs, liver, and skin What do the LUNGS excrete? –C0 2, h 2 0, heat are excreted when you exhale What are the functions of the Kidney? –1) filter blood & remove extra water, salt, urea (nitrogen compound), vitamins, minerals, sugar, amino acids –2) maintain water balance in the blood
4
What is Urine made of? –H20, urea, salt (& other substances) How does the Skin excrete wastes? –Sweat glands remove wastes from the blood & you perspire (perspiration = sweating) What wastes are excreted by the skin? –H 2 0, salts, UREA, - 99% H 2 0
5
What are the functions of the Liver? –* filters blood and removes nitrogen wastes from extra amino acids and form UREA. –Breaks toxins in blood (drugs and alcohol) –Filters and breaks down your red blood cells
9
1 kidney-removes waste from the blood -maintains salt & water balance 2 Nephron-microscopic (only 1 cell thick) -blood filtering unit of kidneys 3 Ureter-tube that carries urine from kidneys to bladder 4 Bladder-stores urine 5 Urethra-carries urine from bladder to outside of body
10
SKIN
11
1EpidermisDead layer of cells; protects inner layer 2DermisLiving layer of skin cells 3Fat (adipose)Connects layer of skin muscles below it, provides warmth and cushioning 4Oil GlandProduces oil to keep hair & skin moist 5HairProvides warmth & sense of touch 6Nerves/bloodSense of touch- provides nutrients for cells 7Sweat GlandProduces sweat from wastes to help regulate body temperature
