London is situated on the both banks of the river Thames. London is divided into several parts: The City, The West End and The East End. The City is the heart of London. Numerous banks,offices, firms are situated here. It is the financial centre of the UK with banks, offices and the Stock Exchange.The City extends over an area of about 2.6 square kilometres and about half a million people work there. Westminister is the historic place of London. Trafalgar Square is the natural centre of London. It was named so in memory of the victory in the battle of Trafalgar where English fleet under Admiral Nelson’s command defeated the combined fleet of France and Spain. Buckingham Palace. It has been a residence of the Royal Family. Thousands of tourists come to see it every year. The Palace has 600 rooms. St. Paul’s Cathedral. It is the most famous building in the City today and the third largest church in the world. It was the greatest work of sir Christopher Wren. The Tower of London. It is a very old building in London. It is nine years old. In the old times of the history of England The English Kings lived there. Then it was prison. Nowadays it is a museum. The Houses of Parliament in London is the place where the members of Parliament gather to make laws. Big Ben is the clock tower of the Houses of Parliament.You can hear the sound of Big Ben every hour. The clock and the bell got their names after Sir Benjamin Hall. He was a tall man, whose nickname was Big Ben. Piccadilly Circus is a square in the central part of London. London’s best-known theatres and cinemas and the most famous restaurants are on Piccadilly Circus. Westminister Abbey is one of the most famous and beautiful Churches in London. Many English kings and queens,poets and scientists are buried there.e.g. Charles Dickens, Rudyard Kipling. Issac Newton are buried there.

6 Windsor Castle is the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world, and it's the official residence of Her Majesty The Queen. Built over 900 years ago the castle's floor covers a massive 480,000 square feet. The castle is surrounded by some beautiful gardens and the picturesque English countryside. St George's Chapel, inside the grounds, is a fine example of gothic architecture and features the tomb of Henry VIII. Windsor Castle is currently home to a special exhibition "Royal Paintbox: Royal Artists Past and Present" in the Drawings Gallery.

7 THE TOWER OF LONDON has been closely associated with many important events in English history. It has served as citadel, palace, prison, mint and menagerie. The White Tower was built in 1078 by William the Conqueror to protect the city. The Tower is famous for its illustrious prisoners, such as Sir Thomas More and Guy Fawks. Many notable people lost their heads on the executioner’block. The Tower is protected by Yeoman Warder at the Tower of London, known popularly as"Beefeaters".

8 ST. PAUL’S CATHEDRAL is a masterpiece of Sir Christopher Wren. It stands at the top of Ludgate Hill on a site where a Christian church has stood since the 7-th century. The building of the Cathedral started in 1675 and was not finished until 1709. The magnificent classical structure is crowned by a cone. Inside the Dome are scenes from the life of St. Paul. Here too is the famous Wispering Gallery. There are many memorials in the Cathedral includuing those to the heroes such as Wellington and Nelson.

13 Westminster Abbey This beautiful gothic church is a UNESCO World Heritage Site popular with many visitors to London.Kings, Queens, statesmen, aristocrats, poets, priests, heroes and villains are all part of the church’s fascinating history. Many of whom were buried at the Abbey including Charles Dickens, Geoffrey Chaucer, Dr. Samuel Johnson and Charles Darwin. There is a special Scientists corners at the church which is home to a memorial for Isaac Newton. Since the crowning of William the Conqueror in 1066, Westminster Abbey has been the nation’s Coronation church. Many Kings and Queens, including the current reigning Queen Elizabeth II, have been crowned on King Edward’s Chair.

14 Hampton Court Palace is the former home of the flamboyant King Henry VIII, he extended and developed this grand palace after acquiring it in the 1520's. Its many royal occupants have ensured the palace has fabulous furnishings, tapestries and paintings. Set in 60 acres of formal gardens, which include the famous maze and Great Vine, this palace is well worth a visit. King Henry continues to hold court daily at Hampton Court Palace where visitors can enter a living Tudor world and participate in life at the palace. Visitors might have the chance to meet with the King to discuss the current political situation or even see how the King prepares for bed. Hampton Court Palace
