11 Characteristics Have cartilage = skin that is lighter & more flexible than bone Gill slits Ventral mouth (underneath head) Meaty fins Do not need air Placoid scales = pointed like teeth

13 Shark Facts Shark meat is eaten around the world Fished for oil Shark skin used for leather called “shagreen” & sandpaper Fins used for soup: has led to overfishing of sharks and a ban on shark finning

14 Why Sharks are Important Some sharks are filter feeders & feed on plankton Balance ecosystems by feeding on small prey that would otherwise take over

15 Rays and Skates Stingrays: Some live on the bottom = “demersal” Pectoral, wing-like fins Have whip-like tail with stinging, poisonous spines Electric rays can deliver shocks up to 200 volts (original shock therapy used by Greeks) Skates: Similar to rays in appearance Lack tail
