2. Take A Look Back. Founded Feb. 12. 1909, the NAACP is the nation's oldest, largest and most widely recognized “grassroots- based” civil rights organization The NAACP was formed partly in response to the continuing horrific practice of lynching and the 1908 race riot in Springfield. A group of white liberals that included Mary White Ovington and Oswald Garrison Villard issued a call for a meeting to discuss racial justice. Some 60 people, seven of whom were African American (including W. E. B. Du Bois, Ida B. Wells-Barnett and Mary Church Terrell), signed the call.

3. What Is The Purpose? In the past the NAACP fought Jim Crow Laws and disfranchisement - the NAACP concentrated on using the courts to overturn the Jim Crow statutes that legalized racial segregation. In 1913, the NAACP organized opposition to President Woodrow Wilson's introduction of racial segregation into federal government policy, offices, and hiring.

4. Purpose (cont.) The NAACP, along with the half-million adult and youth members throughout the United States, are frontline advocates committed to raising awareness for political, educational, social and economic equality of minority group citizens in the electoral process. 5. Membership Everyone is able to become a part of the NAACP, you just have to sign up on their website. You will receive letters and emails explaining what it is to be in the NAACP, and you will be ASKED to donate, and attend current events. As of now the NAACP has approximately 2,200 adult branches, youth councils, and college chapters in 49 states, 5 countries and the District of Columbia. The NAACP has between 150,000 and 250,000 members,

The NAACP has helped abolish the death penalty in New Mexico, Illinois, Connecticut and Maryland Rolled back discriminatory felony disenfranchisement laws in Delaware and Virginia They registered 374,553 new voters and mobilized 1.2 million citizens to the ballot box for the 2012 election They helped increase graduation standards for NCAA athletes; played a pivotal role in downsizing the penal system in Texas and Georgia “Abolishing the Death Penalty Campaign: The NAACP engaged in coordinated campaigns to abolish the death penalty at the state level in New Mexico, Connecticut and Maryland. Result: New Mexico abolishes the death penalty in 2009. Result: Passage of death penalty repeal in Connecticut in 2012. Result: Maryland repeals the death penalty in 2013.”
