Born May 16, 1886 – Tilbury, Ontario, Canada Died December 27, 1966 – Chicago, Illinois Sociologist – researched the family as a social unit BA from Kingfisher College (Oklahoma) and PhD from University of Chicago Taught at University of Toledo, University of Kansas, Ohio State University moved to University of Chicago, professor emeritus 1951 WHO THE HECK IS ERNEST BURGESS?

Concentric Zone Model (1923) – first to explain the distribution of different social groups within urban areas City grows outward from a central area in a series of concentric rings, like the growth rings of a tree – precise size and width vary Five different rings: 1: CBD, the innermost ring, where nonresidential activities are concentrated 2: a zone in transition – industry and poorer-quality housing, immigrants to the city first live here in small dwelling units (created by subdividing larger houses) 3: a zone of working class homes, modest older houses occupied by stable working-class families 4: a zone for better residences, newer and more spacious homes for the middle class 5: a commuter’s zone beyond the built-up area of the city – some people who work in center choose to live in small villages that become dormitory towns for commuters (Page 410/411 in the textbook) HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
