Good Design Is As Easy as 1-2-3 1. Learn the principles. They’re easier than you might think. 2. Realise when you’re not using them. Put it into words – name the problem. 3. Apply the principles. You’ll be amazed.

Good Design Learn the principles. They’re easier than you might think. Realise when you’re not using them. Put it into words – name the problem. Apply the principles. You’ll be amazed. 1 2 3 is as easy as…

Four Basic Principles of Design Contrast – If the elements, things, on the page are not the same (type, colour, size, line thickness, shape, space etc.) make them very different. Contrast makes the reader look at the page. Alignment – Every element should be connected in some way to another element on the page, this makes it look organised and sophisticated. Repetition – If you repeat elements (colours, shapes, textures, spatial relationships, line thickness, fonts, sizes, graphics etc.) it makes your work look unified. Proximity – Things that are linked should be put together, it helps to organise the information and makes it easier for the reader to follow the information.

Proximity Things that are linked should be put together, it helps to organise the information and makes it easier for the reader to follow. Why? We don’t need to cover the whole page, if we leave white space it helps our readers to see the information clearly.

Why? Changing your alignment and font (typeface) can change the style of your work. Think about where you put things on the page and try not to use more than one alignment on one page.

Repetition If you repeat elements (colours, shapes, textures, spatial relationships, line thickness, fonts, sizes, graphics etc.) it makes your work look more organised and ‘whole’. Which elements are repeated in the second design?

Contrast If the elements, things, on the page are not the same (type, colour, size, line thickness, shape, space etc.) make them very different. Contrast makes the reader look at the page. Don’t be a wimp! What happens to the text on the left hand box?
