6 Causes of the First World War Several factors led to the war : 1. France and Germany butted heads over control of Alsace- Lorraine, a piece of land located on the border of the two countries (1871). 2.Russia's efforts to control the Balkans, so they can gain access to the Mediterranean Sea. By doing this he had come into conflict with Turkey and Austria.

7 Causes of the First World War Several factors led to the war : 3.European powers feared the growing German power. 4.The spark in the powder keg, just an excuse to start the war, was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary, and his wife Sophie by a Serbian student, Gavrilo Princip. (1914) 5. Serbia was held responsible for the murder.
