Intro to 20 th Century Warfare Units 5-7 focus on IB HOA Topic 1 – Causes, Practices, and Effects of War, Topic 5 – The Cold War & Prescribed Subject 1 – Communism in Crisis Major themes include: Different types of 20 th century warfare (civil, guerilla, limited, total) Origins and causes of war (long-term, short-term, S.P.E.R.M) Nature of 20 th century wars (technological advances, tactics, strategies, home front, resistance) Effects and results of war (Peace settlements, attempts at collective security, territory changes, post-war problems, S.P.E.R.M.) These units use a case study approach and examines the above themes for WWII, Algerian War, Falklands War, Chinese Civil War, Gulf War, and Korean War

Timeline The IB topic of 20 th century warfare will be broken into three major sections: Today – December 18 th : The Failure of Collective Security and WWII (Unit 5) January – February: Case studies of 20 th century warfare: limited vs. civil vs. guerilla (Unit 6) March – May: Cold War and Communism in Crisis (Papers 1 & 2 – Unit 7) We will be using handouts from the IB textbook: 20 th Century Warfare

Collective Security Post-WWI For homework, you will look at the failure of collective security in preventing the outbreak of war, along with the impact of the Great Depression in Europe in the 1930’s. As you read, take notes on: How the League worked (decisions made, settlement of disputes) Problems for the League of Nations in the 1920s Successes/Failures of the League in the 1920s STOP reading at Ruhr Crisis, we will pick up there next class!
