Life in America Before the Revolution

The Great Awakening In the 1700s religious interest grew due to an increase in evangelistic revivals –Emotional sermons –Faith over reason –Sermons about hell (Jonathan Edwards) Most famous sermon: –“Sinners in the hands of an angry God” –Revival tours though the colonies (George Whitefield)

Jonathan Edwards First Great Awakening Sinners in the hands of an Angry God And you, children, who are unconverted, do not you know that you are going down to hell, to bear the dreadful wrath of that God, who is now angry with you every day and every night? Will you be content to be the children of the devil

The Great Awakening Results of Great Awakening –Growth in many protestant denominations –Salvation encouraged for all –Many denominational colleges were founded –Many African slaves found hope in Christianity which started to shape African American culture

Mercantilism Definition: –The colonial economy benefits the mother country American Colonies benefit England The colonies were controlled markets for England Navigation Laws/Acts –Colonies required to trade with England Colonies buy England’s manufactured goods Colonies sell England raw products –Use ships made in England –Colonies could not compete with England’s markets –Tax stops required when colonies traded with other nations

Salutary Neglect Salutary Neglect – –England did NOT enforce these Navigation Laws until 1763 –The non-enforcement of laws in known as salutary neglect –The colonies LIKED salutary neglect Allowed the colonists to develop democratic institutions –Virginia House of Burgesses –New England Town Meetings

French and Indian War (1754 to 1763) French and their Indian Allies vs. British and American Colonists Conflict: LAND (what land belonged to England and what land belonged to France?) In 1754 Virginia Colonists tried to take a French fort at the Ohio River – the war began

French and Indian War (1754 to 1763) At first, the war went poorly for the British In 1758, the British began to overwhelm the French and the French soon retreated to present day Canada Treaty of Paris was signed in 1763 to end the war –All land east of the Mississippi was given to the British Large war debt caused salutary neglect to end British began to enforce trade laws.

British Actions After French & Indian War British became much more stringent –END OF SALUTORY NEGLECT! British felt colonists benefited from defeat of French but were ungrateful

Proclamation of 1763 Without French, land east of Ohio River became “free” and “open” As colonists moved, they were attacked by Indians Ordered settlers to return east (right side of red line) Could not enter region without approval from government

Causes of the American Revolution Salutary neglect ends/ trade restrictions enforced Mercantilism – colonies are taken advantage of economically Taxation without representation in Parliament Britain placed limitations on individual rights
