Outdoor Space Parking Lot Write your idea for something we can do to improve the form/function of the middle school outdoor space When you are done, add the sticky note to the parking lot on the board Some ideas to get your mind working: Mural, framed art, hanging art, hanging plants, water proof rugs, etc.

When We Are Outside We will be next to classrooms on the concrete, so be respectful and not too loud Sit in a half circle around the end of the pull string (this is 15 feet away from the launch zone) Follow any other directions the whole time PLEASE If the rocket flies over a fence, we have to just “LET IT GO’’

Figurative Language The definition of figurative language is when you describe something by comparing it with something else.

Come up with your own “analogy” for how a bottle water rocket works Remember my story: Part of a water rocket is like stuffing hyper kids into an elevator. In a water rocket, we compress a lot of fast moving water molecules into a small space and they are trying to get out. They push on the sides of the bottle to get out. Each water molecule is like a kid that ate too much candy and wants to move around a lot. If you took a lot of those hyper kids and put them into a small elevator, they would bump into each other and really want to get out! They would push against the walls of the elevator. That is the same as pumping a lot of air into the bottle with the tire pump. The water in the water rocket is like the elevator doors. They are shut and do not let the kids out, just like the water doesn’t let the air out. Opening the doors is like pulling the lever on the rocket launcher. It lets the water out of the way so the air can come exploding out. Imagine what would happen once you opened those elevator doors, the kids would come running out! Journal: Write a story that uses figurative language, in this case an analogy, that compares something to how a water rocket works. **This story/analogy is only the first part. It does not explain how propulsion makes the rocket go into the air or any laws of physics. It simply describes how the air in the water rocket compares to hyper kids. If I had time, I would start a new analogy to describe propulsion or the Newton’s laws. You can choose to describe the whole process or just one part, as I did.
