Do Now Pick Up You binder Pick up your book Flip to Chapter 6, Activity 1 Take out your data table from yesterday
3
Do Now: 11/18/09 1) What do you need for a reaction to take place? 2) What can happen when you combine two substances together in a reaction? Think back to your lab yesterday….
4
Physical vs. Chemical Changes
5
What’s the Difference? Matter can change Examples: Freeze, cut, burn, etc. 2 types of changes 1. Physical changes 2. Chemical changes
6
What is a solution? Two liquids combined Typically a solute with a solvent
7
Physical Changes Matter changes form WITHOUT becoming something new – You start and end with same thing (see below) Examples: cutting, freezing, melting, etc.
8
Molecules in Physical Changes
9
Chemical Changes Matter changes, becomes NEW substance – Start and end with different things Usually irreversible (can’t change back) Examples: burning, rusting, milk going sour
11
Molecules in Chemical Changes The atoms arrange to make a new substance
12
Chemical Change = Reaction Products: the resulting solutions in a reaction Reactants: starting solutions in a reaction
13
Signs of Change Physical – Size – Shape – Texture Chemical – Temperature – Color – Bubbles/fizzing – Smoke – Smell
14
Chemical Reaction Demo NaHCO3 NaOOCCH3 + HOOCCH3 + H2O + CO2 Baking Soda Sodium Acetate, and Vinegarwater, and carbon dioxide
