4 RESOURCES FOR BROADCASTERS Script packages developed and delivered to all partners Electronic newsletter distributed to over 1000 African subscribers; Scriptwriting competition and online courses that several hundred radio practitioners participate in; Online social community for radio broadcasters; Regional workshops for radio content development.

5 PARTICIPATORY RADIO CAMPAIGNS A participatory radio campaign is: A planned, radio- based activity, conducted over a specific period of time, in which a broad population of farmers is encouraged to make an informed decision about adopting a specific improvement selected by their peers

6 THE AFRICAN FARM RADIO RESEARCH INITIATIVE Began April 2007 3.5 years 5 countries – Malawi, Uganda, Tanzania, Mali, Ghana 25 radio stations (5/country) Reaching 39 million farmers

7 Two sets of campaigns produced 1 st = November 2008 – April 2009 2 nd = October 2009 – April 2010 A TOTAL OF 38 different campaigns produced across 25 stations in five countries Topics included: Composting Introduction of new varieties ( Nerica rice) Group marketing Improved livestock storage PARTICIPATORY RADIO CAMPAIGNS

8 4440 households included in the survey Used Mobile phones to conduct the survey 90 communities -30 active listening communities – contact with broadcasters (ALC) -30 passive listening communities – access to radio (PLC) campaign but no contact with broadcasters -30 control listening communities – no or little access to campaigns (CC) OVERVIEW OF OUTCOME EVALUATION

9 FINDINGS: CHANGES IN KNOWLEDGE AND TECHNOLOGY UPTAKE FROM THE PRCS What have we learned? Radio provides SCALE: over 2/3rds of farmers listen regularly to PRC’s PRC’s increase knowledge: they more than triple the number of farmers with detailed knowledge of a specific ag technology one in five people reached by PRCs start practicing the technology – 5 times more than usual
