3 The Battle of Jutland was the only major naval conflict between Britain and Germany, resulting in a British victory and a decisive defeat of the German navy that would restrict the German Fleet to only minor sweeps in the future of the war.

4  Britain had the largest navy in Europe  Island  Colonies border water  Germany didn’t want to try to take on the large navy  Britain had very little to gain and lots to lose  Germans planned to avoid an all-out battle until they could first sink enough British warships to make the numbers more even.  1916, German plan  lure parts of the British Grand Fleet out into the North Sea by swift surface raids on East coast towns such as Scarborough and Sunderland.

5  1916, German plan (cont)  German submarines were stationed several miles outside the main British naval bases of Rosyth and Scapa Flow for the purpose of sinking British battleships with torpedoes as they left port to deal with the surface raids.  Germans decided to lead the whole of the German High Seas Fleet out into the North Sea, sending battlecruisers under Admiral Hipper ahead as a decoy to attack merchant shipping in the sea passage between Denmark and Norway, known as the Skagerrak.  Unknown to the Germans however, the British were able to decode German radio messages. The messages to Hipper were intercepted and passed to Admiral Jellicoe, who immediately ordered the British Grand Fleet to sea under cover of darkness to avoid the waiting German submarines.

6 The war began on the afternoon of May 31, 1916. It was between the German and British recon groups who opened fire first. The British admiral used the sunset to his advantage and weaved in and out with his warships and fired many direct blows causing the German admiral to retreat. Both the Germans and the British claimed victory but the British gained control over the North Sea.
