God and Rest

Australia no longer the country of “no worries, mate” as stress levels soar by: Shitika Anand From: The Courier-MailThe Courier-Mail July 02, 2010 6:45PM UNDER PRESSURE: A poll has found Australians are now even more stressed out than Americans. NINE out of 10 Australians suffer stress, with work being the chief cause, according to a poll which found Aussies are now "significantly" more stressed than Americans. The study, by Lifeline Australia, found that levels of anxiety have shot up in the past year and the modern "workaholic mind" is to blame. Lifeline spokesman, Chris Wagner, said: "We work too hard. We are known to have the longest work hours. We take our work lives very seriously and with boosting technology, we're now taking our work home. "Believe it or not, when you compare the results of the USA's last stress poll (2009) to ours, we are significantly more stressed than they are. "Their poll had 75 per cent of people stressed with 25 per cent experiencing high levels of stress, while our results are 90 per cent and 43 per cent in comparison. Australians really need to work at managing their stress levels."

MANNAMANNA

Ten Commandments: Sabbath Exodus 20:8-11 8 “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9 Six days you shall labour and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates. 11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

Forbidden by Law in the Sabbath Working Fire Lighting Gathering Wood Trade or Commerce Heavy Lifting Speaking Idle Words

Serious Side to Sabbath Law Stoning for Gathering. Num 15:32-36

Isaiah 58:13-14 13 “If you keep your feet from breaking the Sabbath and from doing as you please on my holy day, if you call the Sabbath a delight and the LORD’s holy day honourable, and if you honour it by not going your own way and not doing as you please or speaking idle words, 14 then you will find your joy in the LORD, and I will cause you to ride on the heights of the land and to feast on the inheritance of your father Jacob.” The mouth of the LORD has spoken.

John 5:7-10 7 “Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.” 8 Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” 9 At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked. The day on which this took place was a Sabbath, 10 and so the Jews said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat.”

Matt 11:28-30 28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

What Not to Do To become ultra-religious and attempt to live out the perfect law based Sabbath To have a pattern of working 7 days without taking rest Let the stress and worries of life control how you live

What We Can Do Be deliberate about making personal time to rest and delight in God Trust God that He will provide and protect, enabling us to take the time to rest At times we need to say NO to noble tasks Plan to make time to rest in God with family and friends Copy God’s example and have one full day of rest each week

Have you put your faith in Jesus to receive true spiritual rest? How often do you take time out to rest in God, delighting in Him? What can I change to rest more in God in 2012?
